It was a genre I knew almost nothing about, so I did a lot of listening, and learned a lot. The most important thing I took away from the experience was the concept of the "drum circle." The idea is that every instrument is thought of as a percussion instrument. In other words, what you play must make sense and be interesting melodically, harmonically, and RHYTHMICALLY. This is another way of saying "Pay attention to your phrasing!" And if you think about it, some of the best guitarists around are brilliant with their phrasing, even if they're not unusually gifted, technically.
