| Greetings!
Spring is here. Finally. But, March was a great month. Took
a family trip to NYC, discovered the Bone Conduction
Music Show and got moved into our double-the-space warehouse. Onwards and upwards...
This month Joey Leone starts his Legends of Rock
& Roll columns, Don Mackrill gets interactive, Michael
Wright unearths another ugly ugly guitar, Rob
Roberge's rare Silvertone and Kirk Lorange drops
back in with a lesson in Open Air.
Johnny Hawthorn offers more advise for your
recording project, we have more YOU TUBE entries and you can
check out some pictures from NYC Guitar shops.

When you talk about great authentic white blues guitar
players, you are surely talking about some rarified company.
The key word being authentic, and in my estimation authentic
white blues guitar player means that when you listen to this
person playing you think it's a black man playing.

Hokay. You got yer Vee shape. Yer Explorer. Yer Moderne.
Guild's Gumby Thunderbird and National's "maps." O'Hagan's
Shark. And then there's all those B.C. Rich Biches and things.
Plus some really horrendous ideas like Kay's Solo King, shaped
like the State of Ohio! Guitars shaped like machine
guns.

Rare is, of course, a relative term when you're talking
about anything made by Danelectro for Sears. This ain't a hand
carved arch-top by one of the D'Whoever's in New York, or a
prototype KOA wood, only ever seen by Ted McCarty and the
33rd-level Masons who know the secret Skull & Bones
handshake and Vulcan death grips, after all.

This month’s article is interactive! That’s right, you have
an opportunity to voice your opinion and I’ll publish the
collective feedback next month. The topic is: branding. WAIT!
Before you click the back button, hear me out. The simple
definition of the word ‘brand’ is the image that a particular
product has in a person’s mind. Let’s use some examples to
illustrate this idea.

I was fiddling around on my new acoustic the other day,
exploring and experimenting with the use of open strings in
unusual configurations and came up with an interesting piece I
call 'Open Air' ... I thought I'd share it with you, mainly
because it forces you to really think about what you're
playing rather than just flipping the autopilot switch and
reworking familiar ground.

This past week I was stumbled upon by the one and only THAYRONE-X. Who is he? Well, since that day I have been
tuning in nightly to the coolest Internet Radio show on earth
- The Bone Conduction Music Show - it's a white hot
mega blast of wig singeing Rock & Roll, hip shakin' Soul
music, and industrial strength Rhythm & Blues. I could go
on and on about it, but the best thing to do is just tune-in
for yourself. What ever happened to RADIO like
this!!??

Last month we took a look at the do’s and don’ts of
preparing your band for the recording studio. But before we
press the record button let’s talk about preparing the vocals.
Recording vocals for me personally is always hit or miss. Some
days you sing great and some days you feeling like a first day
reject for American Idol. You want to try to be consistent and
prepared so I’ve got my own routine for practicing my vocals
so that when the day comes I’ll be ready to go!

Two weeks back my wife Kay and 8 yr old son Troy took off
for a quick drive to New York City. I have not been there in
over 20 years - hard to believe. What an incredible place. Kay
and I agreed that we need to get back there more often. Of
course, this is a GUITAR Newsletter, not a family vacation
slide show, so here are some pictures from the trip that are
worth posting here.
