My Cousins Backyard (with the Beatles)

My Cousins Backyard (with the Beatles)

Growing up in Miami during the 60's was a lot of fun with the beachs and the good weather, there was a small town atmosphere. I didn't realize then what a hot bed of music I was living in. Battle of The Bands every weekend at the Concord Shopping Center, your basic strip mall. You could hear the music on my front porch. Mostly Surf and insrumental tunes, matching shirts, guitars and blond Fender piggy back amps...the typical garage band fair , but some of my favorites to this day!

Workin' for the Weekend, No Really! (The Story of Hondo Guitars)

By Michael Wright, The Different Strummer

It's not very fashionable, I know, but I like '80s music. I should be too old for it, but I sat out the '70s listening to acoustic music from the 1920s and '30s and playing classical guitar. I began listening to rock again in the early '80s, beginning with Ozzy and Randy Rhoads. Boy could he play!

    Baritone Guitars

First of all, I promise that there is more to this than my history as a musician, but it does set the backdrop for a strange fascination that I've developed. I started out playing bass with a high school hard rock band in 1982. I just wanted to be in my friend's newly formed band and couldn't sing, play guitar, or play drums.

    Mack Amps: FX Loops

    Mack Amps: FX Loops

    by Don Mackrill

Effects loops are often added to a tube amp. Almost as often they are either unused or misunderstood. This month we'll take a look at how effects (FX) loops work, the two different types of loops and the pros and cons of each. What is an effects loop? Simply put, an FX loop allows you to insert effects into the amp's signal chain.

Kirk Lorange - Open Air - an étude

    by Kirk Lorange

Here is another interesting look at how notes conveniently line themselves up in standard/dropped D for slide. I've played this in D, but these positions exist for any other chord. They may jog themselves into new octaves, but these double stops belong to all keys. If you think of a minor key as an inverted major key (Am is to C), then you can apply them to minor keys too.

Monthly G.A.S. Attack: Gear Acquisition Syndrome

This month's G.A.S. Attack, a 1940 ES-100, was Gibson's entry level electric guitar model and renamed the ES-125 in 1941. The ES-125 continued its production run until 1970. Introduced in 1938, the ES-100 also used a blade style pickup that was similar in design to the Charlie Christian utilizing two flat bar magnets.

ON THE NET - Practicing Guitar Scales And Guitar Chords

When thinking in terms of practicing guitar scales and guitar chords, many guitarists tend to overlook the overwhelming value of such practice. After all, some might argue, practicing a guitar scale just for the sake of practicing a guitar scale, doesn't seem like a very exciting prospect.
