    The Low Down (Baritone Guitars)

One Man's Journey for Darkest of Tones

First of all, I promise that there is more to this than my history as a musician, but it does set the backdrop for a strange fascination that I've developed. I started out playing bass with a high school hard rock band in 1982. I just wanted to be in my friend's newly formed band and couldn't sing, play guitar, or play drums.

    1967 Hofner 459TZ Guitar

Fuzzy Memories (1967 Hofner 459TZ Guitar)

By Michael Wright, The Different Strummer

When I first learned of this guitar, it was known among cognoscenti as the State of Ohio guitar. I once wrote and essay in which I dubbed it The Ugliest Guitar In The World. All of us had a point. The real name, however, is the Kay Solo King K4102, and it dates to that heady period just before guitars really took off in 1960.

    Kalamazoo Reverb 12 Guitar Amp

    by Rob Roberge

Last month, I was talking about the very cool little Guyatone 535 model that takes 2 EL84s (6BQ5s) for a clean, very chimey, shimmering tone. Plenty of British sounding chime and a great amp for 12 strings and clean tones. And this month, I'm going to talk about the Kalamazoo Reverb 12.

Kirk Lorang - The Power of Chord Tones - 1

As you must know by now, when I improvise melody over a piece of music, I don't think scales. I would have very little success creating a solo over anything thinking scales. That's not to say that others wouldn't ... but I wouldn't know where to begin thinking along those lines, especially in a piece like this that introduces a bunch of 'outside chords' into the picture
