Hello fellow guitar nuts, I just returned from the Eastwood guitar complex in Toronto. While sunning myself in the Great North I performed some tasks for Eastwood, some of those tasks were the video clips of some of Eastwood's basses. I actually was a bass player for many years before switching over to guitar. As I was playing the basses, I thought back to the guys that influenced me and some of my friends in the bass genre. So....

I love the classic guitar shapes. They're what attracted me to the guitar oh those many years ago. But as you can probably tell from these little essays, I'm also a sucker for a pretty face. Pretty weird, that is. Like this 1983 Electra Lady XV1RD with a Little Dutch Girl shape!

There's a David Lodge novel where some characters, who are literature professors, play this game where they admit which books they haven't read that everyone assumes they must have. One character names Ulysses. Another character mentions The Sun Also Rises. The main character says Hamlet and he gets fired.

Such a great old tune, and Public Domain to boot, so there's no copyright to fret about. I did another version of this in standard tuning, in the key of G, which you can find here, but I do love Dropped-D tuning and it certainly lends itself to this old nugget. I started using dropped D decades ago, and it's become the only tuning I use, other than the lessons I create for Guitar for Beginners and Beyond.

This month we tackle recording electric guitar. I've been fortunate enough to record guitars in many different studios with many different engineers. Each engineer or producer has a certain way they like to mic an amplifier (or speaker cabinet). Let's discuss some of the most common ways. Recording vocals for me personally is always hit or miss. Some days you sing great and some days you feeling like a first day reject for American Idol. You want to try to be consistent and prepared so I've got my own routine for practicing my vocals so that when the day comes I'll be ready to go!

Blues may just be one of those genres you either love or hate depending on your personality, but it is and always will be the basis for all rock and roll. I consider some blues to be just another form of rock music and some rock to just be another form of blues the two genres overlap so much, but I thought it was time to discuss an "actual blues album", if you want to call it that.
