    My Rare Guitarticles OCTOBER 2009

Personally, September was a GREAT month! It started out with my 50th Birthday - plenty of friends and plenty of good times. Golf, then fishing, the down to NY for the ATP Festival. Sad to see this month come to an end, but plenty of great memories.

Fall has arrived and we have a bunch of cool stuff happening here at MRG headquarters. Enjoy the newsletter!

We've Only Just Begun: My 50th Year

    by Mike Robinson

Wow. Where did the time go? OK, I'm 50. No big deal. I'm just a little surprised how fast I got here that's all. Looking back I can't imagine having more fun along the way and no reason to think it will get any less silly moving forward.

Catching a Wave (1984 Takamine Solid Body Guitar)

By Michael Wright, The Different Strummer

I don't go to guitar shows much any more. I should, because I have a lot of friends who ply the floor, but I've been on a guitar diet for several years now. And my friends always find something goofy for me to buy. That's how I ended up with this mysterious and rare Takamine solidbody guitar from 1984.

On The Road with the URINALS

    by Rob Roberge

It wasn't even a tour, just a few dates in the Midwest over a long weekend. But it sounded like fun. Even a short time on the road is usually a good time, and we'd be playing with our buds from Chicago, the fabulous Mannequin Men, for all three dates. And it proved to be the great time it promised to be.

    Music Practice and Motivation

    Music Practice and Motivation

    by Nick Cresswell

If you want to learn to play an instrument or get better at playing an instrument there is a guaranteed way that you can achieve this: practice. Like with anything we decide to learn, the more we do something the better we get at doing it. This applies to everything we do in life.

Kirk Lorange - The Power of Chord Tones

As you must know by now, when I improvise melody over a piece of music, I don't think scales. I would have very little success creating a solo over anything thinking scales. That's not to say that others wouldn't ... but I wouldn't know where to begin thinking along those lines, especially in a piece like this that introduces a bunch of 'outside chords' into the picture

What the Hell?!? (Gibson's Jimi Hendrix Guitar Package)

What the Hell?!? (Gibson's Jimi Hendrix Guitar Package)

    Gibson does Fender

There's been buzz on the Web and an actual broo-ha- ha this week in anticipation of the announcement of Gibson's "Jimi Hendrix Guitar" package. As even the most casual Hendrix fans know, his main axe was a Fender Stratocaster. What is Gibson doing in this space!?

ON THE NET - How to play the Day Tripper

My good friend Chris Vinnicombe - Guitar Editor at musicradar.com - puts out a quick and clear lesson on this classic Beatle riff. Chris has the new AI RLINE RS-II in UK for an upcoming review, but found it did a bang-up job of coping the proper tone for this timeless tune. - Enjoy!
