Secrets of the Great Guitar Players

Secrets of the Great Guitar Players

    by Joey Leone

Hello to all out there in guitar dominion, this month's column will I hope reveal some of the great secrets of some of our favorite guitar players as well as dispel some common misunderstandings. One of the greatest musicians of the 20th century was also a damn good guitar player, he stands alone as a composer, instrumentalist and satirist beyond compare. His name was Frank Zappa. Frank is still IMHO the most underrated musician in the rock and roll era.

    1965 Kay K350 Titan I Guitar

    Bushwhacked by the past...

By Michael Wright, The Different Strummer

The wonderful thing about the world of design is that every once in awhile you get to feel smug and sit back and say, "WHAT were they smoking?!" In the case of this 1965 Kay K350 Titan I, I'm not sure but what it wasn't more a confluence of circumstances that created this Frankenstein, because parts of it are actually not that bad, and, to be honest, the quality is surprisingly good. But other parts are downright u-ugly.

Kirk Lorang - The Art of SOLOING

Kirk Lorang - The Art of SOLOING

One of the most difficult aspects of playing an instrument, but THE most rewarding when you've figured out how, is the art of playing solos. The ability to manipulate four octaves or so of notes into a coherent melody, on the fly, following (sometimes bending) the musical rules and pulling it off, is one of the best feelings going.

    Kent Short Scale Bass Guitar

    Rob's Crazy EBAY Finds...

    By Rob Roberge

The Short-Scale Bass is a versatile and wonderful instrument. It packs enough punch to be used as a part of a bassist's gigging set-up. Its shorter scale (anywhere from the super duper short 25 7/8" of the Valco/National/Supro/Airline pocket basses, to the 30" of the classic Fender Mustangs and Musicmasters) makes it comfortable to play for beginners, small-handed adults and guitar players more familiar with guitar scale. Plus, a lot of very cool ones have been made over the years.

    Harmony Stratotone H44 Guitar

    50 Years Later...

Historic Harmony Stratotone gets a well deserved UPGRADE

The Harmony Stratotone H44. For me, this is one of the coolest blues/slide guitars ever made. Copper or Black finish - short body with a FAT neck - just nothing like it then or since. And for the longest time - 50 years - you could still snap one up for under $600 However, in the past 12 months, the price has suddenly doubled to the $1,500 range. What the @%$*&!!K????

    Lloyd Cole and Son

    My Rare NOTABLE

    by Mike Robinson

This month in My Rare NOTABLE is the new CD, ANTIDEPRESSANT from Lloyd Cole. I've been a Lloyd Cole fan from the moment I heard Rattlesnakes in 1984. The following year gave us the single Brand new Friend and I've been hooked since. Hard to believe those albums could be topped, but ANTIDEPRESSANT gives them all a run for the money. Check it out. Lloyd Cole will be touring Europe and UK this month.

    EASTWOOD Guitars Exposed...

    EASTWOOD Exposed...

Over the past four years we have managed to stay under the radar screen of the industry. It's been fun. But this month Michael Molenda, Editor of Guitar Player Magazine, decided to tell his readership about the party we got goin' on around here. Like they say, you can run, but you can't hide. Don't worry, we won't change....
